If you’ve ever been the victim of a terrible bad beat, you already know how frustrating and hopeless you feel afterwards. There’s nothing worse than having a hand that you thought was a lock and then still losing with it. Few things have caused more keyboards, mice and monitors to be punched, kicked and thrown against walls than bad beats.
Absolute Poker knows how frustrating it is to be the victim of a bad beat so that’s why they’ve created a special progressive jackpot for bad beats. If you lose with a strong enough hand, you might actually win money. Lots of money.
How the Bad Beat Jackpot Works
Absolute Poker has special tables set up just for the bad beat jackpot. If you sit at one of these tables, each pot is raked an additional $0.50 (if the rake reaches $0.25 or higher) and that extra $.50 is added to the jackpot. With all the people playing at Absolute’s jackpot tables, the prize fund grows to staggering proportions. One recent jackpot topped $800,000 before it was triggered.
When a player loses with quad 8’s or better, the bad beat jackpot is triggered and the victim, the winner and everyone at the table all get paid. The victim takes the biggest share of the jackpot, the winner of the hand takes a smaller share and the other players at the table split the rest.
After the jackpot is awarded to someone, a new jackpot begins immediately. The new jackpot starts out with 25% of the funds from the previous jackpot and then it begins growing again just like the last one did. Eventually someone will hit the most next jackpot and yet another one will begin.
Breakdown of the Jackpot
The jackpot is broken up into the following pieces:
• 25% is saved to feed the next jackpot
• 10% goes to the house
The remaining 65% is broken up as follows:
• 50% goes to the victim
• 25% goes to the winner
• $1,000 goes to each other player at the table
• The remaining money is divided up and given to everyone else playing at the same game type and stakes at the time
Bad Beat Jackpot Rules
To qualify for the bad beat jackpot, there are a few rules you’ll want to be aware of:
1. You must be playing at a designated bad beat jackpot table when the bad beat occurs
2. Both hands involved in the bad beat must use both hole cards
3. The losing hand must have four 8’s or better
4. A jackpot rake must be collected during the hand the bad beat takes place
The rules are pretty simple but you’ll want to keep them in mind. Imagine how it would feel if you thought you had qualified for the bad beat jackpot and then later learned that you actually didn’t. That would be the worst bad beat of them all.
The fourth rule might confuse some players but basically what it requires is that the bad beat occurs in a hand that was raked $0.25 or higher. That’s the point at which the jackpot rake is collected.
