Believe it or not, there is a slightly different strategy that players should employ in the Double or Nothing Tournaments versus regular sit-n-go’s. In the Double or Nothing sit and go tournaments, players should play more conservatively. Since there is no need to become the big stack at the table, you don’t want to put too many chips at risk unless you hold a really strong hand (if not the nuts).
Early on, you want to see as many cheap flops as possible. Any time you can limp with suited connectors, any two face cards or small pocket pairs, you should. Early in the tournament is when the worst players are still at the tables. So, you want to take advantage of them before somebody else does.
Look to make very strong hands, then bet big when you make them. A lot of the players in the Double or Nothing Tournaments are pretty weak in skill levels. You will get called more often than you will in other tournaments. If you have a chance to take down a big pot, why let them off cheap?
During the middle stages of the tournament, look to slowly build your stack without risking too much. Make smart, late-position moves to steal blinds. Try not to be all-in pre-flop (definitely not without a big pair). Don’t risk your entire stack unless you find yourself short-stacked, and if you do get short-stacked, try to make moves while you still have enough chips to scare away opponents.
It’s very common to see players with 4000 chips loosen up their game trying to knock out players. While it’s great to eliminate players, it’s not the job of the big stack. Your job is to get into the money by any means necessary. In many cases, players with big stacks end up getting involved in pots they didn’t need to win, with cards they shouldn’t have been playing, then they end up losing a big chunk of their stack. Now they have to struggle along and fight like everyone else. If you get a big stack, hold onto it and don’t give it away.
The main strategy difference in the Pokerstars Double or Nothing Tournaments versus regular sit-n-go tournaments is that you don’t need all the chips at the table. It is more important to protect the chips you have than it is to pile up a huge stack.
Play smart, make your opponents pay when you hold monster hands, and otherwise keep to a conservative game style. This will get you into the money more oftern, and help you build up a bankroll slowly but surely.
